Planning a trip to Rome and not sure where to stay? Trust me, I get it. Rome is huge, and with hundreds of hotels spread across dozens of neighborhoods, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. They all look amazing on the booking sites, don’t they?
But I’ve stayed in Rome multiple times, explored almost every district on foot, and now know exactly which areas are worth staying in. And all the hotels I recommend below are places I’ve personally stayed at or would happily stay at again.
Just like with any big city, the neighborhood you choose can completely change your experience. So let’s take a look at the best areas in Rome and the best hotels in each one.
Which Area of Rome Should I Stay In?
There are five main parts of Rome that I always recommend to visitors: Centro Storico, Trastevere, Monti, Prati, and Termini/Esquilino. Each has its own charm, atmosphere, and convenience.
Centro Storico (Historic Center)

If you want to be in the middle of the action, choose the Centro Storico. This is where most of the iconic Rome sights are located, including the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and the Spanish Steps.
In short, the best Cafés, restaurants, gelato shops, and attractions in Rome are all just a few steps from your hotel.
❤️ My must-see in Centro Storico: The Pantheon, with its massive dome and open oculus, is jaw-dropping inside and out. The oculus is the most important feature of the Pantheon – it’s 9 meters in diameter, and it’s so much more than an aesthetic choice. The architect, by opening up the apex of its dome, meant the dome could survive for thousands of years!
Why stay here:
- You can walk everywhere
- Extremely atmospheric
- Safe, lively, and full of restaurants
- Ideal for first-time visitors
Keep in mind:
- The most expensive district
- It can get crowded in peak season
✅ Our favorite hotel here: The 3-star Albergo del Senato is very close to the Pantheon. It’s elegant, classy, and many of their rooms offer views of the Pantheon.
Trastevere

If you want charming streets, delicious food, and a romantic feel, Trastevere is your best bet. It’s like a village inside the city, with narrow cobblestone alleys, warm lights, and fantastic trattorias. It’s perfect for couples and travelers who want atmosphere over proximity.
Yep, this charming, bohemian neighborhood is my go-to for wandering aimlessly (in the best way). With its colorful buildings, ivy-covered facades – it’s like walking through a movie set. You’ll also find lots of free churches filled with stunning art, like Santa Maria in Trastevere.
Why stay here:
- Beautiful medieval streets
- Best food scene in Rome
- Lively in the evenings
- Very photogenic and cozy
Keep in mind:
- Can be noisy at night
- Not as close to major sights (but still walkable)
✅ Our hotel pick here: Hotel de Russie is one of the most luxurious hotels in the city. It’s peaceful, refined, and home to one of Rome’s most beautiful hotel gardens.
Monti

Monti is one of Rome’s coolest districts. Stylish cafés, boutique shops, hip wine bars, and a relaxed vibe give it a modern feel while still being close to the Colosseum and Roman Forum. It’s a great pick for young travelers or anyone who wants a more local neighborhood.
❤️ My must-see here: Easily the most famous sight in Rome is located in this neighborhood – the Colosseum! It was built between 72 and 80 AD and could fit up to 80,000 people. It was mainly used for gladiator fights, public spectacles, animal hunts, and even mock sea battles.
Why stay here:
- Trendy cafés and shops
- Central but not crowded
- Close to the Colosseum
- Safe and walkable
Keep in mind:
- Boutique hotels only
- Can be pricier than expected
✅ Our hotel pick for Monti: Fifteen Keys Hotel is stylish, friendly, and beautifully designed. We highly recommend it.
Prati (Vatican Area)

Prati is elegant, clean, and spacious. It’s home to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica. This neighborhood is great for families or anyone who wants a more peaceful base while still having easy access to major attractions.
❤️ My must-do here: St Peter’s Basilica is hands down one of the most impressive churches I’ve ever stepped foot in – and it’s totally free to enter. It’s filled with masterpieces by Michelangelo, Bernini, and others.
Why stay here:
- Quiet and safe
- Wide streets and upscale shops
- Near the Vatican
- Great for families
Keep in mind:
- Not as charming as Trastevere or the historic center
- Slightly farther from ancient Rome
✅ Our recommended hotel here: We recommend Boutique Hotel Piedra Rome City Centre a 3-star, stylish hotel that’s just 600 meters from the Vatican.
Termini / Esquilino

If you’re traveling on a budget or planning day trips from Rome, this is a very practical location. It’s not the most beautiful district, but it has excellent transportation links and plenty of affordable hotels.
I had one of my favorite coffees in Rome here at Faro – Luminary of Coffees!
Why stay here:
- Best prices for hotels
- Great transport connections
- Good for short stays
Keep in mind:
- Not the most charming neighborhood
- Some streets feel busy at night
✅ Our pick here: If you want a clean, modern, and affordable place to stay near the station, The Hive Hotel is a great option.

How Many Days Do You Need in Rome?

As a general rule, I recommend spending at least 3 to 5 days in Rome.
Three days will let you see the highlights, but five days give you time to enjoy the city at a slower pace, explore hidden neighborhoods, and maybe even take a day trip.
Getting to Rome

Rome has two main airports (both welcome flights from across the world), and both are well connected to the city.
From Fiumicino (FCO) to the city, there are plenty of options, including:
- Leonardo Express train to Termini
- Airport buses
- Taxis at a fixed rate
While from Ciampino (CIA), you can:
- Catch a selection of shuttle buses to Termini
Once you’re in the city, walking is the easiest way to get around. The metro is helpful for longer distances, and buses reach areas the metro doesn’t.
My Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Rome

I hope this detailed guide has helped you choose the best place to stay in Rome. As you’ve read, each neighborhood offers something completely different, and the right hotel really depends on what kind of trip you’re planning.
To simplify what I’ve written above –
- For first-time visitors, the Centro Storico or Monti is perfect.
- For couples, Trastevere or Portrait Roma will make your trip magical.
- And for families, Rome Cavalieri has everything you need.
- And if you want something peaceful and elegant, Prati is a wonderful choice.
Whatever you choose, you really can’t go wrong – this is Rome, after all.

Booking Your Trip Soon? These are my go-to booking sites!
Below you will find a list of the sites we always use when booking our trips. By booking via the below links you can support my writing at no additional cost to you. Thanks so much!
1. Flights
I use Skyscanner or Cheapoair to find the best flights. It allows you to compare and book flights on over 500 airlines from across the globe.
2. Hotels
I use Booking.com for all of our hotel stays. And if we’re traveling on a budget, I like to use Hostelworld to book a hostel.
3. Renting a Car
We tend to always book our rental car through Discover Cars. This is a search engine for rental cars and allows you to filter by price if you’re on a budget or by vehicle type if there’s a specific car you’re after.
4. Tours
I use Viator or Get Your Guide to book any guided tours we plan on doing. I find Viator particularly good for the USA, Canada & New Zealand, and Get Your Guide is great for Europe.
5. Travel Sim Card
An eSIM is a great idea if you’re coming to a place for more than a week. As that way, you won’t need to change your number or remove the physical SIM from your phone. They are so handy and cheap, too. Obviously make sure your phone is compatible with an eSIM first. We always use Saily for our eSIM’s.
6. Airport Pick-Ups
Instead of cabs, we book with welcome pickup to get from the airport to our hotel. Why did we do that? The drivers from Welcome Pickups are English speaking and you’ll pay a flat rate. So, you know exactly how much you’re paying before hopping in.
7. Compensation for Delayed or Canceled Flights
You can easily claim compensation for a canceled or delayed flight with the website – AirHelp. You just input your flight details and some personal information, and AirHelp will handle the rest.
